Drum roll….FINISHED!

Wow, this was a lengthy project and one of my biggest yet.

I started this granny flower project in April of 2019.  And almost a year later I’m excited to say it’s finished.

Granted I didn’t work on it full time.  There were a couple of months I didn’t work on it at all.  But it’s basically been laying on the sofa throughout this time reminding me that it wasn’t completed.

I found this pattern tutorial on Lullaby Lodge by  searching Pinterest.

It got my attention right away but I have to admit that I wasn’t sure what I was going to make.

As I started making the granny flowers I got on a roll and just crocheted away.  Before I knew it I had quite a few.  I decided to lay them out on the floor one night to see just how many I did have.  I was shocked at how fast it went…..

…Then it started to slow down as I added the off white to make it into a square.

I completed all the squares, once again placing them on the floor so I could get an idea how big the blanket would be.

Also while I was placing the squares I wanted to make sure that I wasn’t going to have colors duplicated and side by side or two similar looking squares side by side- you get the idea.  When I picked them up from the floor, I stacked them by rows, tied them loosely with a piece of yarn and tagged them with a small piece of paper numbered 1 thru 15 so I could crochet and connect them together in the same order I had placed them on the floor.

Notice at the bottom of the photo my small pieces of paper I used to number the rows 1-15 so I could keep the rows in order

As you can only imagine the color possibilities are numerous when you use this many different colors of yarn.

I mostly used leftover yarn that I had partial skeins of, only purchasing about 4 new skeins to add.

Starting to crochet and connect the rows together after I had crocheted each square together

And I purchased all of the Caron Off White yarn that I used to make it into a square and to join and connect all the squares.  I used the single crochet method to join the squares and the rows.  It is joined by single crochet from the back.  Therefore the front and the back of the blanket will have a slightly different look (see picture below).  There are several methods to join granny squares but the single crochet is the one I’m most comfortable with.

Since I used yarn I already had on hand and added a few skeins that I purchased,  I actually have no idea how many skeins of yarn it took to complete this blanket.

But it is a good use of leftover yarn and will make a colorful blanket if you choose to go with a multitude of colors like I did.

After I finished crocheting and putting the blanket together, I decided to add a border.  You don’t have to add a border at all.  And my border is different from the one added in the original post/tutorial by Lullaby Lodge.

The first step I like to do when adding a border is single crochet around the entire project in the least conspicuous color – on my blanket that would be the off white yarn.

This helps to make the edges of the project look more straight and it’s easy to crochet into if you are adding more border and different colors of border as I did.

So for my border I first added:
one row of single crochet in the Caron Off White
one row of treble crochet in the Red Heart Cafe Latte
one row of double crochet in the Red Heart Hot Pink
one row of single crochet in the Red Heart Hot Pink
one row of single crochet in the Caron Off White

It turned out beautiful and I’m so happy I ran across this free pattern.   I’m not sure what I will do with this blanket.

But as much as I like making gifts and giving away my projects, I don’t think this will be a gift.  It was a lot of work I’ll admit and I think I’ll hold onto it!
