I’ve found a new use for an old smart phone.

We’ve probably all experienced it.  You upgrade your smart phone and find that you’ll only get a $25 credit, if you’re lucky, on the newest model that can cost you around a thousand bucks.  We have at least four old smart Iphones and even a few other brands in a box – we chose to not take the measly trade in for our upgrades…and no, we didn’t throw them away.  Continue reading “New Use for Old Smart Phones”

Last year Dixie and I went to Puerto Rico together for the first time.  We hope to return again someday.

Our visit was only a few short months after Hurricane Maria devastated the island.  There were still a lot of indications of the extent of that damage around the capital of San Juan and all over the island, especially the central areas.  We talked to many people in the hotels, restaurants, our UBER drivers, basically anyone who we encountered and heard so many stories about the hurricane and the after effects still taking place all over the island. For the last several years we have gone out and enjoyed the St. Patrick’s Day festivities in our area.

We have several little places close to our house that do fun events in honor of the ‘holiday’.

There is a parade in our downtown area and afterwards they close down the Main Street and it becomes a crazy afternoon and evening with a lot of green attire and of course, green beer. Continue reading “Sheppard’s Pie”

We’ve recently been doing Meatless Monday.

Yeah, I know it’s a catchy phrase (actually it is an international health initiative encouraging people to go meatless one day a week) and is being used more and more lately, but we decided to get on the movement and give it a try.

Most of the inspiration to do so came from my daughter-in-law.  She recommended that we watch a documentary on Netflix about plant-based diets and the benefits. ‘Game Changers‘ is about eating only a plant-based diet and the effects it has on your lifestyle.  It is interesting but upon further search (Google) I read where it is a biased documentary with misleading information.  Personally, this doesn’t affect our household of two – we like our meat and have no intention of turning into vegetarians or vegans! One of Dixie’s and my favorite “mini” vacations is to travel north through Alton, Illinois, then along the Great River Road,

…..making our way to the little town of Grafton and then a bit further to spend a night or two at the Pere Marquette Lodge, built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps.  We first learned of Pere Marquette a few years ago when they were offering something called the ‘Eagle’ Package from December through February.  It included a night in either one of their hotel type rooms or even better one of their rustic stone cabins. The key word being rustic.  They are somewhat dated, but have all the amenities you need and the bed guarantees a great night of sleep. We’ve always chosen the cabin.  If you want to know more about this place, just let us know and we’d be delighted to share what we know. Continue reading “Great River Road”
