DIY Wood Planter Box

Succulent plants need to be planted in a container that drains really well.  Some articles we read while researching succulents said the pot or container should be ‘breathable’.

We recently bought some succulent plants and have been searching for just the right container or planter for them.  We kind of knew what we wanted and after searching around in a few local stores and online, we decided to make our own.

Honestly, succulents are hard to grow.  Hopefully these will survive. Continue reading “DIY Wood Planter Box”

If you’re craving salsa from your favorite restaurant, give this easy recipe a try.  It’s so much better than the salsa from a jar you can buy at the store.  And, you can control the amount of ‘heat’ to suite you taste.

This recipe was given to me from my sister about 25 years ago.  When I was thinking of posting this recipe, I dug out my old recipe file that I made and put together in my High School Home Economics Class.
We were required to write out a certain number of recipes and turn it in for a grade.  My file box collected other recipes over the years. And this one was tucked inside the file box.

The Lost Wallet

He slowly revealed the package with a huge smile on his face – a ziploc bag containing his slightly moldy and damp wallet having spent the tough Illinois winter outside.  The sticky note attached simply read, “We found this while walking near the United Township soccer fields in East Moline, Illinois.”  No name, no return address.

In something less than two months, we find ourselves, our families, our communities, our nation and even the world in uncharted territory.

In that short amount of time we have been thrown into something so foreign to us that we are all having a lot of difficulty coping. We are in self quarantine, practicing social distancing – probably the catch phrase of the century,  wearing face protection, intentionally crossing the street to avoid oncoming neighbors and even dear friends and adjusting to so many more things we never imagined. In Home Date Night

We thought if we could have just one thing that we’ve really missed what would it be? We decided it would be pizza. So we started looking at the different pizza chains a few days ago and dreaming about pizza – imagine that.

During this time of uncertainty and time of seeing thousands of our fellow citizens stricken with COVID-19, many of whom have unfortunately perished, we, the citizens of the greatest nation to ever exist, have done and are doing all we can to defeat this unseen denizen – and at great sacrifice, to say the least.

We’ve been asked to self-quarantine.  We’ve been asked to stay at home.  We’ve been told to social distance. We’ve lost countless jobs and businesses.  We’ve lost national treasure, never to be restored.  But we do it because we are all in this together.  Our lives have been turned upside down and what we knew as normal is to be no more.  Our world will forever be changed by this pandemic.

With everything that’s going on with our self quarantine and stay at home instructions, we decided to try to normalize just one tiny part of our lives – just a little something to take our minds away from the chaos and tragedy surrounding us every day.

Freshen Up that Old Gas Grill

For thirty bucks or so and some tender loving care and a bit of elbow grease you can get your grill back up to cooking condition in no time.

If you have a gas grill like I do, then you know that after a season or two of grilling the steel heat plates get really nasty with food drippings and even begin to rust after a while.

And even though I winterize every year and remove the heat plates, wrap them and place them in the garage along with the grill plates themselves, they still somehow manage to rust.
The gas burners and cross over tubes are the worst and do wear out.
So instead of throwing the grill out and buying a new one, why not go on Amazon or visit Lowe’s or Home Depot and buy just those replacement parts. Continue reading “Freshen Up that Old Gas Grill”

ZOOM Virtual First Birthday Party

But this ‘ZOOM’ virtual video birthday party for our one year old granddaughter really was a lot of fun….

Our youngest granddaughter turned one on March 26th, 2020.

In light of current world events and the mandated self quarantine and stay at home orders taking place everywhere due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we organized a ‘ZOOM’ virtual birthday party on March 28th to watch her attack her first birthday cake. And boy oh boy did she ever attack that chocolate cake – a total mess, but just what we all needed to see.

It was definitely uplifting and inspiring to see the innocence of a child having so much fun. We were all thankful that we are healthy and able to meet in this manner and enjoy our family being together, even if it was virtually. Our hearts go out to those who are suffering during these troubling times. Continue reading “ZOOM Virtual First Birthday Party”
